As it happened: Wild Easter weekend weather causes power outages, flooding (1)

Power company Vector is warning some customers in the Auckland region may have to wait until Monday to have power supplies restored.

Electricity was knocked out to hundreds of properties during ex-Cyclone Tam, followed by intense thunderstorms which hit the city overnight.

The outages are affecting residents mainly in the west and north of the city.

Vector says they've made steady progress since ex-Cyclone Tam hit on Thursday, but the overnight electrical storm has made things more difficult due to fallen trees and branches.

It says some repairs may take until Monday to fix.

Auckland Emergency Management general manager Adam Maggs says it has been a "particularly intense few days weather-wise for our region and that's expected to continue throughout the afternoon, which will no doubt disrupt people's Easter holiday plans".

"The system that is hitting the region this afternoon is fast moving, and updates are being provided as quickly as possible.

"We strongly encourage people to stay on top of the weather forecast, be prepared for it to change quickly, keep an eye out for any alerts, and to remain vigilant at all times."

Auckland was hit by a severe overnight thunderstorm which has caused flooding in areas across the region. Some houses continue to lack power due to significant damage to power lines.

The line of thunderstorms, connected to ex-Cyclone Tam, is moving very slowly over the region.

It comes off the back of days of wild weather following ex-Cyclone Tam, which has left thousands still without power, and damaged roads and other infrastructure.
