Wood Dr. Okmulgee (Across from Stewart Martin) Wellness Coalition focused on smokeless tobacco during Great American Spit Out Free coaching by phone and free patches or gum help smokeless tobacco users quit for good In Okmulgee County, the use of smokeless or spit tobacco is a serious problem.

The Okmulgee County Wellness Coalition is highlighting the harmful effects of smokeless tobacco during Through With Chew Week (Feb. 14-20) and at the annual Great American Spit Out on Feb. 18. The important message is that smokeless tobacco doesn't mean harmless tobacco. At the Great American Spit Out, the Okmulgee County Wellness Coalition encourages Oklahomans who use smokeless products to quit for at least one day.

To assist smokeless tobacco users in quitting, OCWC recommends calling the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784- 8669). "Smokeless tobacco may not receive the same kind of attention that smoking cigarettes does, but that should not detract from the fact that it's a harmful product that leads to nicotine addiction and causes cancer," said Lydia Campbell. "Calling it 'cherry' or 'spice' or 'wintergreen' only disguises the carcinogens like arsenic and formaldehyde that are inserted into the tobacco during the fermenting and aging process." Through With Chew Week is a national educational awareness week designed to get people talking about smokeless tobacco use and increase awareness of the negative health effects of using chew. Thursday, Feb. 18 is the Great American Spit Out, a day to help smokeless tobacco users kick the habit.

Among Oklahoma adults, 5.4 percent, or about 130,000, currently use smokeless tobacco. If you really want to know the effects of smokeless tobacco products, ask your dentist. "Oral Pre-cancerous lesions caused from smokeless tobacco often go unnoticed. By the time most people seek help for these areas, they have turned cancerous and require extensive treatment and life altering surgeries," said Jerod Yaerger, D.D.S. "In fact, The American Cancer Society reports that an estimated 80 percent of oral cancer is caused by tobacco use." ABOUT THE OKMULGEE COUNTY WELLNESS COALITION The Okmulgee County Wellness Coalition is a Communities of Excellence grantee of the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust serving Okmulgee County and promoting smoke free environments, tobacco cessation and tobacco prevention.

State NRCS announces EQIP Organic Initiative availability for 2010 Ron Hilliard, State Conservationist for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Oklahoma, announced $1.5 Million of funding in Oklahoma to provide financial assistance to National Organic Program (NOP) certified organic producers as well as producers in the process of transitioning to organic production.

This assistance will be provided through the Organic Initiative of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis, but those received by March 12, 2010, will be considered tor the initial selections. Funding selections will be made on or before April 9, 2010, exclusively from those applications received. NRCS provides all services and programs in a nondiscriminatory manner. Organic farming is one of the fastest growing segments in U.S.

agriculture. The Organic Initiative gives financial and technical help for producers of all commodities to meet their conservation goals. The assistance from the NRCS helps producers plan and implement conservation practices to allow operations to be environmentally sustainable. The Organic initiative offers cost share assistance for a variety of practices to assist producers in addressing resource concerns on their property. This year, the program includes funds for Seasonal High Tunnel Houses.

Oklahoma is involved in a three year study to verify if high tunnels are effective in reducing pesticide use, keeping vital nutrients in the soil, extending the growing season, and providing other benefits to growers. Made of ribs of plastic or metal pipe, covered with a layer of plastic sheeting, high tunnels are easy to build, maintain, and move. High tunnels may provide a significant advantage to owners of small farms, limited resource farmers, and organic producers. "This program will give growers the opportunity to address existing resource concerns such as soil and plant condition while providing the added benefit of expanding the season for locally grown crops. says Ronald Goedecke, NRCS District Conservationist in Okmulgee County.

The EQIP Organic Initiative funds may only be used to address organic-related EQIP contracts. Eligible producers include producers who are currently certified organic and producers who are transitioning to organic production. EQIP primarily provides financial and technical assistance to implement conservation practices addressing soil, water, air, plant, animal, and energy resources. All practices offered through EQIP and compatible with organic operations are also offered through the organic initiative. Some of these practices include: alley cropping, brush management, forage harvest management, prescribed grazing, and pest management To assist with eligibility questions, there are two separate national screening tools for applicants: one for producers transitioning for the first time and one for certified organic producers transitioning additional land or adding additional conservation practices.

Ranking criteria has been established based on resource concerns that link to the NOP objectives and national priority concerns. For information on these practices and more, www.ok.nrcs.usda.gov/farm- To learn about the NOP and organic certification requirements administered by the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), visit www.ams.usda.gov/nop/.Or, Or. you can visit your local field office at 719 E. 8th Street, Suite Okmulgee, OK or by telephone at 918-756-0850.
