S. Course WASHINGTON, Sept. Bernard Baruch, international financier and adviser to American presidents, today said that unpredictable acts by warring powers would determine whether the United States could stay out of the European conflict. Emphasizing that he was speaking only for himself as he left a conference with President Roosevelt, Baruch said that it was impossible to anticipate acts by nations "unintelligent enough to engage in a war which may kill millions of men, women and children." He was convinced, however, that if this nation did become involved in the war that "no one will gain and there will be no profits." "You can put this in your pipe and smoke it," he told reporters. "If we get involved nobody is going to what they think will make.
A ceiling will be fixed on prices. Taxes will be increased. a anybody, thinkar, they're crazy." If they can make The financier, who served as chairman of the War Industries Board during 1917-18, declined to say whether he had been asked by the President to serve on the newly created National Resources Board assigned to mobilize American industry in the event of a national emergency. As he chatted with reporters, Baruch was greeted by Herbert Bayard Swope, who served with him on the industries board and who yesterday conferred with Mr. Roosevelt.
Baruch said that the nation's greatest need at the present was to build up a strong army, navy, marine and air corps and to arm the services with most modern and deadly offensive and defensive weapons available. Then, he said, the United States would have "real voice for war or peace." W. M. SWANN WINS SHEEP CONTEST Robertson Man Reports Best Income Per Ewe In Competition SPRINGFIELD, Sept. 14- (Spl) -W.

Fall Term Approximately 150 criminal cases, one of the heaviest dockets on record, have been set for trial in the Nashville Division of the United States District Court for the fall term beginning at 9 oclock on the morning of September 25, it was announced yesterday in the office of the clerk.
Cases growing out of alleged violations of the internal revenue laws on liquor lead in number, making up about half of the total. Other cases range from violation of the migratory bird law to violation of the narcotic law. Set for October 5 and 6 are cases charging conspiracy violate the internal revenue liquor laws and involving more than 30 defendants. These cases grew out of investigations made several months ago following numerous still raids in the Marrowbone section of Cheatham and Davidson Counties. Yesterday, U.
S. District Court Clerk Lonnie B. Ormes mailed notices to approximately 65 attorneys representing litigations in all pending civil cases in the Nashville Division of the court, telling them that the civil docket will be sounded at 9 o'clock on the morning of September 26. CARVER RETAINS SKILL SUPERIOR, he lost his left arm a number of years ago, Harry Mills, Superior, thought his wood carving days were over. But "just on a hunch," he picked up his tools again about a year ago and, in his own words, "found that first carving then was better than any I had done before." His work is displayed at the Superior public library.

ANSWER TO PETITION SPRINGFIELD, Sept: 14- (Spl)-Judge J. F. of Ashland City and George Bracey Murff. of Joelton will fight out on neutral ground for tomorrow Eastern hotly. contest the Fired Tobacco Growers' Association directorship for Davidson, Sumner and Cheatham counties.
Bracey began the contest after the votes were counted in Ashland City recently, asserting that of the 259 votes received by Judge Murff, 198 of them were illegal, being votes of association members who had not requested the ballots in person or in writing, as required by election rules. Bracey's contest petition states that G. T. Jackson, chairman of the election, turned over to Murff a number of blank ballots, without any written request therefor from the members, and that Murff, armed with the ballots, went over, the territory getting members to sign In his answer to this petition, Murff denies that he did this, or that anyone did this for him. He that even if this had been added, ballots would not be voided, as the requirments of the election rules and regulations that ballots be requested by the members in writing or in person is suggestive only and does not have to be followed.
The election officers at Ashland City certified the vote to the canvassing board to be: for Murff, 320 votes, and for Bracey, 270. The election committee which met here later and went over the ballots found only 316. votes for Murff and 256 votes for Bracey. Judge Murff has -been director from Davidson, Sumner and Cheatham counties since the organization of the association, and is now serving as county judge of Cheatham. Bracey is a farmer of the Joelton community.
The election committee which will hear the here row is composed A. Bradley, contest, Fleasant View; J. J. Broome, Palmyra; Dennie Cash, Eddyville; W. C.

"When we asked where his crowd was he said they were in the alley. I said I hoped I never met him in an alley and he said that if he did I would be a blankety-blank dead woman," she maintained.
